The Milan-based lender reported quarterly earnings that comfortably surpassed analyst estimates of €2.8 billion. Buoyed by these results, the bank raised its 2026 income guidance, now projecting figures well above €11 billion. Management explicitly linked the cancellation of the buyback to the strategic shift, noting that the investment in Commerzbank is projected to deliver a 15% return.
UniCredit first moved into the German market in 2024, a decision that triggered immediate political friction in Berlin.
