Global Markets Stumble as Energy Prices Surge

A sharp rally in oil prices is rattling investor sentiment across Western markets, dragging U.S. stock futures lower and pushing European indexes into the red. Brent crude jumped 3.9% to reach $97.73 a barrel, while natural gas contracts in the Netherlands climbed to 63.48 euros per megawatt hour.

Global Markets Stumble as Energy Prices Surge

European trading remains under pressure, with the Stoxx Europe 600 sliding 0.8%. France’s CAC 40 and Germany’s DAX followed the downward trend, shedding 1% and 0.8% respectively, while London's FTSE 100 edged down 0.3%. Individual stock volatility remains high: Dassault Aviation surged 8.3% and Huhtamaki added 7.3%, but heavy losses hit the tech sector as STMicroelectronics tumbled 14.9% and Temenos dropped 10.4%.

Across the Atlantic, S&P 500 futures are down 0.4%, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average tracking a 0.5% decline. Bond markets show a slight sell-off, pushing the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield to 4.674% and the German 10-year Bund yield to 3.22%. Despite the broader malaise in the West, Asian markets finished the session in positive territory, led by a 1% gain in Hong Kong’s Hang Seng and a 0.5% rise in Japan's Nikkei 225.
