The financial strain is reshaping daily life, with 56% of parents reporting that caregiving costs directly derail their long-term savings plans. The pressure is forcing significant lifestyle concessions: 66% of surveyed parents would choose better schools for their children if their budgets allowed, while an equal number fear that funding college will permanently compromise their own retirement security. Even among homeowners who have paid off their mortgages, 30% report that current expenses are preventing them from building wealth, suggesting that the crisis stems from broader economic pressures rather than just housing debt.
Despite this widespread anxiety, a significant knowledge gap persists regarding personal assets. According to data from Unlock, 40% of homeowners do not know how much equity they possess, and 39% assume they would not qualify for any financing options to access it. With the average U.S. homeowner sitting on $274,000 in equity, many are ignoring a potential lifeline. Michael Micheletti, chief communications and marketing officer at Unlock, noted that these figures represent more than just economics; they reflect families skipping medical care, delaying home repairs, or choosing not to expand their families due to immediate fiscal constraints.
