Freeport-McMoRan Profits Climb as Metal Prices Offset Production Dip

Surpassing Wall Street expectations, Freeport-McMoRan reported a second-quarter profit of $984 million, or 68 cents per share. The mining giant leveraged a surge in realized prices for copper and gold to bolster its bottom line, even as operational shifts at a key Indonesian site constrained overall production volumes.

Freeport-McMoRan Profits Climb as Metal Prices Offset Production Dip

Adjusted earnings reached 74 cents per share, comfortably beating the 62-cent consensus projected by FactSet analysts. While total revenue dipped 7% to $7.03 billion, the figure still outperformed market forecasts of $6.71 billion. This financial performance highlights the company's ability to capitalize on favorable commodity pricing despite a simultaneous decline in year-over-year sales volume for its primary metals.

The production shortfall stems largely from reduced operating rates at the Grasberg Block Cave mine in Indonesia, where the company is currently navigating a phased ramp-up of underground infrastructure. Conversely, molybdenum bucked the trend, seeing increases in both production and sales volume alongside higher market prices, a shift Freeport-McMoRan attributed to a strategic reduction in existing stockpiles.
