Tigera Launches eBPF-Powered Networking for VMs on Kubernetes

Tigera has introduced Calico for VMs on Kubernetes, an eBPF-based platform designed to bridge the gap for organizations migrating virtual machines from VMware. By enabling a single control plane for both containers and VMs, the tool allows enterprises to replicate NSX-level networking and security without reconfiguring legacy infrastructure.

For many enterprises, the transition to Kubernetes is stalled by the complexity of migrating legacy virtual machines. While compute and storage migration are straightforward, the network identity of these VMs—often hardcoded into VLANs, firewalls, and business processes—creates a significant hurdle. Tigera aims to solve this by allowing teams to perform a "lift and shift" migration that preserves existing IP addresses and network policies, enabling modernization at their own pace.

By leveraging eBPF technology, the platform provides a unified operating model that spans clusters and cloud environments. This approach allows administrators to maintain the same microsegmentation, load balancing, and observability patterns they previously relied on in VMware NSX environments. As organizations increasingly host AI workloads on-premises, this convergence allows them to manage containers and VMs under one management plane, effectively eliminating the need for fragmented, platform-specific configurations.
