Pennsylvania American Water targets talent gap with youth programs

As experienced professionals retire, Pennsylvania American Water is attempting to secure the future of the state’s utility infrastructure by launching aggressive recruitment and mentorship initiatives. The company is betting on early-career exposure to bridge the widening gap between aging expertise and the next generation of essential water workers.

Pennsylvania American Water President Justin Ladner emphasized that the industry faces a critical transition period, necessitating proactive outreach to maintain service reliability. To address this, the utility recently hosted the Flow Forward Summer Camp, providing over 30 high school students from 14 districts with hands-on mentorship and exposure to wastewater career pathways.

Beyond high school engagement, the company is nurturing college-level talent through its Future Wavemakers Internship Program. This year, 16 interns were embedded across departments ranging from engineering to finance, tasked with capstone projects designed to mirror real-world operational challenges. The effort extends to community advocacy as well, supported by the American Water Charitable Foundation, which awarded $75,000 in Workforce Readiness Grants to Pennsylvania non-profits in 2025 to bolster general career and financial literacy.
