The inaugural Acosta Group Affordability Tracker reveals that an 84-item basket of household essentials now costs over $366, marking a 27% increase compared to 2020 levels. Although wage growth has outpaced grocery inflation in recent months, helping to restore some lost purchasing power, the broader economic landscape remains strained. Persistent pressure from housing, insurance, and healthcare costs continues to force households into making rigid trade-offs at the checkout line.
Colin Stewart, EVP of Business Intelligence at Acosta Group, noted that the marketplace has shifted in ways that transcend simple price fluctuations. Retailers and brands can no longer assume that improving economic conditions will automatically revert shoppers to historical patterns. Instead, consumers have adopted a heightened value lens, actively comparing alternatives and seeking deals even as their relative earnings stabilize. This shift suggests that the inflationary era has fundamentally altered consumer expectations, forcing companies to move beyond waiting for a normalization of prices and instead focus on addressing a more permanent, value-conscious mindset.
