Teal Health and UC Davis Launch At-Home Cervical Cancer Screening Pilot

Women aged 30 to 65 who are overdue for cervical cancer screenings are the focus of a new pilot program between Teal Health and UC Davis Health. By utilizing an FDA-authorized self-collection device, the study aims to integrate at-home testing directly into existing electronic health record systems.

The collaboration leverages Teal Health's collection technology alongside the clinical infrastructure of UC Davis Health. Participants are contacted via MyChart, email, or text, and receive test kits by mail. Once the samples are collected, they are processed in the UC Davis in-house laboratory, ensuring that results flow seamlessly into the patient's existing medical records. The study is supported by an NIH SBIR grant and is designed to create a blueprint for other health systems to adopt similar remote screening models.

Researchers are tracking key performance indicators, including patient engagement levels, screening completion rates, and the overall operational feasibility of the workflow. By automating the integration through Epic and HL7 systems, the partners seek to minimize the administrative burden on clinic staff while simultaneously closing gaps in preventive care. According to Kara Egan, CEO of Teal Health, the primary goal is to provide a level of accuracy that matches in-clinic procedures, thereby maintaining provider trust while increasing accessibility for patients who might otherwise delay their screenings.
