Coastal Residents Urged to Prepare as Peak Hurricane Season Approaches

While current forecasts suggest a below-average number of named storms for 2026, experts warn that the most dangerous phase of the hurricane season lies ahead. With historically severe storms often occurring during quieter periods, meteorologists and builders are pushing coastal homeowners to finalize their safety plans before August.

Josh Morgerman, a prominent hurricane chaser, notes that a slow start to the season provides a false sense of security. Historical data confirms that some of the most destructive hurricanes in American history emerged during seasons with low overall activity. As ocean temperatures continue to climb, the frequency of Category 4 and 5 storms is rising, regardless of the total storm count.

Meg Gore, CEO of Deltec Homes, emphasizes that structural resilience remains a critical component of hurricane preparedness. The company, based in Asheville, North Carolina, advocates for early maintenance, including clearing gutters and reinforcing roofs. Deltec’s 360° Signature Collection features aerodynamic, circular designs engineered to withstand wind speeds up to 190 mph. The company reports a 99.9% survival rate for its homes during major events like Hurricanes Katrina, Ian, and Michael. Residents are advised to prioritize essential supplies and evacuation strategies now, before the window for peak activity opens in August.
