Middle East Tensions Drive Brent Crude to $100 as Energy Stocks Rally

Brent crude climbed to $100 a barrel for the first time in two months after Houthi militants targeted two Saudi tankers near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. The escalation, coupled with a vow of major military retaliation from President Trump, has triggered a sharp rally in energy sector shares globally.

The strike on the Saudi tankers signals a dangerous expansion of regional conflict, threatening to choke vital oil transit corridors indefinitely. Scott Shelton, an energy analyst at TP ICAP Group, noted that the crisis has shifted into a more volatile phase, where surging commodity prices threaten to erode broader market demand.

Major oil companies are capitalizing on the windfall. TotalEnergies leveraged high second-quarter prices to slash its net debt by $3.3 billion, bringing its total debt load to just under $20 billion. Similarly, Repsol reported a boost in earnings, announcing a plan to repurchase up to half a billion euros in shares as the industry navigates the geopolitical instability.
