Bolin Du, 8, and Peiqi Gao, 15, both students at the online platform Walnut Coding, moved beyond traditional classroom exercises by utilizing Huawei Cloud CodeArts to build functional software. Gao developed a comprehensive travel-planning application, while Du created an interactive calendar using a combination of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Their participation in the camp required them to defend their design choices and debug their work under the scrutiny of professional developers.
This shift reflects a changing philosophy in digital education. As AI tools increasingly automate code generation, the value of programming literacy is migrating toward the ability to define requirements and verify machine output. According to Walnut Coding founder and CEO Pengxuan Zeng, the goal is to cultivate the judgment necessary to identify effective solutions, rather than treating AI as a shortcut. By integrating these projects into a professional environment, the company aims to demonstrate that a foundational understanding of programming remains essential for effectively directing AI tools to create reliable, working products.
