Euro zone inflation expectations dip as energy prices cool

Euro zone consumers significantly lowered their inflation expectations in June, with the median forecast for the coming year dropping to 3.0% from 3.5% in May. This shift, captured in the latest European Central Bank survey, reflects a temporary easing of energy costs following a brief period of regional stability in the Middle East.

The decline in short-term outlooks suggests that households are sensitive to fluctuations in energy markets, even when such relief proves transient. While the 12-month outlook saw a notable downward adjustment, expectations for the medium term remained relatively stable. Forecasts for inflation three years ahead edged down to 2.8% from 2.9%, while the five-year horizon held steady at 2.4%.
