Vaginitis remains one of the most frequent reasons for clinical visits, yet diagnostic error rates hover near 50 percent. By utilizing real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology, the new assay identifies specific bacterial and yeast strains, including Gardnerella vaginalis and various Candida species. This shift toward molecular diagnostics addresses a significant gap in women's health, as symptoms for these infections are often non-specific and easily misidentified.

Brad Moore, President and CEO of Roche Diagnostics North America, noted that the assay streamlines the testing process by allowing concurrent screening for other sexually transmitted infections from the same sample. The test is intended for professional laboratory use and aligns with current Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. Roche expects to initiate the commercial launch of the system later this year.
