Gold Stalls Above $4,000 as Labor Data and Geopolitical Risks Clash

Spot gold prices hovered at $4,055 an ounce on Friday, struggling to regain momentum as traders reconciled historically low U.S. jobless claims with persistent geopolitical instability. While the metal found a floor above $4,020, firm Treasury yields and a steady dollar continued to suppress any aggressive breakout attempts.

Gold Stalls Above $4,000 as Labor Data and Geopolitical Risks Clash

The latest labor market signal, showing initial jobless claims falling to 187,000—the lowest level since September 1969—has tempered expectations for a dovish pivot from the Federal Reserve. This resilience in employment, coupled with the European Central Bank’s decision to hold rates steady at 2.25%, has left investors recalibrating their positions ahead of next week’s policy meeting.

Energy markets remain a critical influence on the metals complex. Although Brent crude retreated from its $102 peak to trade near $97.67, the ongoing stress in the Strait of Hormuz and shipping disruptions in the Red Sea keep an energy-risk premium firmly in place. This high-cost environment supports gold as a defensive asset, yet simultaneously elevates inflation concerns, which bolster Treasury yields and cap the upside for non-yielding bullion. Technically, gold bears maintain the near-term advantage as prices trade below the 50-period moving average of $4,067. For silver, the outlook is more optimistic; the metal has reclaimed its 50-period moving average, signaling a potential shift in momentum if it can clear the $58.56 resistance level.
