House Committee Blocks Federal Heat Protections for Workers

As record-breaking temperatures sweep across the country, the U.S. House Education and Workforce Committee has advanced legislation to permanently bar the Department of Labor from establishing federal heat safety standards. This move effectively halts a proposed OSHA rule designed to mandate water and shade breaks for vulnerable employees.

The proposed standard, introduced in July 2024, remains in legislative limbo, with the current administration offering no clear path toward adoption. Research from Harvard University suggests that a nationwide heat mandate could save up to 1,500 lives each year. Charlotte Brody, Vice President of Health Initiatives at the BlueGreen Alliance, warned that inaction carries a heavy human cost as extreme weather events become increasingly frequent.

In response to the federal stalemate, a coalition including the United Auto Workers, United Steelworkers, and the Environmental Defense Fund has released an updated checklist for a model heat illness prevention rule. This resource aims to guide states, local governments, and private employers in drafting their own safety protocols. While the BlueGreen Alliance continues to lobby for federal intervention, the new guidance highlights the growing reliance on localized policies to mitigate workplace risks in the absence of national oversight.
