Verizon’s performance illustrates the industry's complex struggle to balance growth with shifting consumer habits. The carrier secured 184,000 new postpaid phone connections—surpassing analyst expectations—yet total revenue slipped 0.7% to $34.25 billion. This contraction stems largely from a 20% drop in equipment sales, as users keep phones longer and the company scales back device subsidies. Profitability also faced pressure from costs associated with a new joint venture.
Charter Communications continues to fight a difficult tide, reporting its fourth consecutive quarterly revenue decline. Second-quarter revenue fell 1.7% to $13.53 billion, pressured by the loss of 172,000 internet subscribers and 21,000 video customers. While Charter managed to exceed earnings expectations with a profit of $10.66 a share, the core business remains under siege from fixed wireless competitors and the accelerating trend of cord-cutting.
