Bambusa Therapeutics reports rapid itch relief in atopic dermatitis trial

Patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis experienced significant skin clearance and rapid itch relief within days of receiving BBT001, a bispecific antibody designed to target both IL-4Rα and IL-31 pathways, according to preliminary data released by Boston-based Bambusa Therapeutics from its ongoing Phase 1 clinical trial.

The study, which randomized patients to receive either 450 mg of the drug or a placebo, showed that participants achieved measurable improvements in the Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) starting just one week after the first dose. Beyond the skin-clearing effects, the treatment demonstrated a capacity for sustained itch suppression, with benefits persisting for eight weeks following the final administration. These findings are particularly notable for the drug's safety profile, as no instances of conjunctivitis were observed among the 17 participants enrolled.

Beyond immediate symptom control, the pharmacokinetic profile of BBT001 suggests a potential for infrequent maintenance dosing—potentially as low as once every three months. This extended half-life, paired with low immunogenicity, positions the candidate as a possible challenger to current standard-of-care therapies. Bambusa Therapeutics now intends to transition the program into a Phase 2b trial, with further data expected in the first half of 2027 to help refine dosing strategies for broader registrational development.
