Mercy Earns Global Recognition for Disability Inclusion

St. Louis-based Mercy has secured a spot as a World's Top Disability Inclusive Business for 2026. The distinction, awarded via the Disability Index, marks the health system's second consecutive year of global recognition, highlighting its ongoing shift toward dismantling workplace bias and elevating accessibility for both staff and patients.

The health system stands among only 12 healthcare providers to receive this year's top-tier designation from Disability:IN. This recognition validates Mercy's systematic approach to fostering an inclusive culture, which centers on the Disability Resources Council and various leadership initiatives across Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. These programs focus on internal development, community outreach, and the removal of physical and systemic barriers to care.

Marisa Hiatt, Mercy's director of experience and inclusion, noted that the organization views these practices as essential to unlocking talent and building institutional strength. By integrating inclusive hiring events and continuous education for its 50,000-plus caregivers, the system aims to move beyond compliance toward a model of active belonging. As the Disability Index continues to serve as a primary benchmark for Fortune 500 companies, Mercy’s performance signals a broader trend in the healthcare sector where accessibility is increasingly treated as a primary driver for innovation and patient experience.
