The Present Situation Index dropped 3.6 points to 114.9, marking its third consecutive monthly decline. This gauge, which tracks current business and labor market perceptions, highlights a growing unease among households. While the Expectations Index remained flat at 74.7, the underlying data reveals a shift in priorities: consumers reported fewer job openings and expressed increased concern over rising food and grocery prices. Despite these headwinds, gold prices responded to the weak data, trading at $4,029.86 per ounce after an initial daily loss of 1.14%.
Dana Peterson, Chief Economist at The Conference Board, noted that the downward trajectory for confidence has persisted since late 2021. Consumers anticipate little relief in business conditions over the coming six months, though expectations for household income remain cautiously optimistic. Notably, inflation expectations for the next year have moderated, yet more than 61% of survey respondents still anticipate higher interest rates ahead. As the survey period captured a timeframe of heightened conflict in the Middle East, the results underscore a fragile economic environment where market participants are increasingly turning to safe-haven assets.
