The current outbreak, spanning nine states, has hospitalized nearly 100 people and brought renewed scrutiny to the lack of a validated 'kill step' for protozoan parasites in ready-to-eat produce. While the industry frequently relies on chlorine-based washes to neutralize pathogens like E. coli, experts and FDA documentation confirm these chemicals are largely useless against C. cayetanensis. Because the parasite cannot be cultured in a lab, control measures have historically prioritized bacterial indicators, leaving a dangerous loophole in the supply chain.
Bill Marler, who is addressing the International Association for Food Protection in New Orleans, emphasizes that the only viable defense lies in water management. Since Cyclospora is transmitted exclusively through human feces, irrigation water serves as the primary infection vector. Despite this, federal regulations do not mandate testing for the parasite, and current Leafy Greens Marketing Agreements focus on generic bacterial markers that fail to detect human-specific contamination. As the industry faces mounting litigation, the debate centers on whether to shift toward microfiltration and ultraviolet treatment to stop the parasite before it ever reaches the field.
