Chipotle Lifts Sales Outlook Amid Mixed Second Quarter Results

Chipotle Mexican Grill raised its full-year comparable sales guidance following a second quarter that saw total revenue climb to $3.3 billion. Despite the top-line growth, the restaurant chain faced margin pressure as rising labor and ingredient costs offset the benefits of recent menu price increases and expanding transaction volume.

The company reported a 2.2% increase in comparable restaurant sales for the quarter ending June 30, 2026, marking a second consecutive period of improvement. CEO Scott Boatwright attributed the momentum to the firm's "Recipe for Growth" strategy, which prioritizes menu innovation, digital rewards, and the expansion of its drive-thru Chipotlane format. During the quarter, Chipotle opened 100 new locations, with 80 of those sites featuring the high-performing drive-thru model.

Financial performance showed a divergence between revenue and profitability. While total revenue grew 9.3% year-over-year, operating margins tightened to 15.7% from 18.2% in the same period last year. Inflationary pressures on beef and freight costs, alongside higher investments in employee compensation and hospitalty initiatives, weighed on the bottom line. Net income reached $403.5 million, or $0.32 per diluted share, remaining flat relative to the second quarter of 2025. Looking ahead, management expects full-year comparable restaurant sales to grow in the low single-digit range, supported by a target of 350 to 370 new store openings.
