International Paper Reports $12 Million Loss in Second Quarter

International Paper posted a $12 million loss from continuing operations for the second quarter of 2026, as the Memphis-based packaging giant navigated a complex environment of shifting market demand and strategic restructuring. Net sales reached $6 billion, supported by growth in North American box volumes despite broader economic headwinds.

CEO Andy Silvernail pointed to improved mill performance and the successful completion of the Riverdale machine conversion as evidence of operational progress. While North American operations benefited from higher sales volumes and seasonal improvements, the EMEA segment faced ongoing pressure, reporting an $80 million operating loss amid geopolitical uncertainty and weaker consumer sentiment. The company is currently executing a separation of its EMEA business, adding to the complexity of its current financial performance.

Looking toward the second half of 2026, International Paper maintains a target for full-year adjusted EBITDA between $3.2 billion and $3.4 billion. Management is prioritizing cost-out initiatives and reliability across its network to mitigate rising input costs. The company plans to finalize its quarterly report by August 6, continuing its efforts to stabilize margins while integrating recent acquisitions like the NORPAC mill in Longview, Washington.
