ICE will acquire all outstanding shares of the bond trading platform for $167 each in cash. Following the announcement, MarketAxess shares climbed 28% in premarket trading, a significant rebound after the stock shed nearly 31% of its value earlier this year. ICE shares also gained 1.7% ahead of the opening bell.
CEO Jeff Sprecher plans to integrate pre-trade analytics, electronic execution, and post-trade compliance tools into one unified platform. This strategy relies on the company’s recent financial momentum, where net income rose to $958 million, or $1.69 per share, compared to $851 million in the same period last year. Revenue in the core exchange segment grew 3% to $1.46 billion, bolstered by a 24% increase in interest rate trading volumes and a 36% rise in metals and agriculture activity as investors sought to hedge against geopolitical instability and shifting interest rate expectations.
