Friends of Science Society Claims Net-Zero Policy Lacks Foundation

Conflict: The Friends of Science Society, a Calgary-based advocacy group, contends that the scientific and economic pillars supporting Canada’s net-zero agenda have disintegrated. In a recent podcast and report, the organization argues that the climate policies governing the nation’s financial and industrial sectors are built upon discredited data.

Energy analyst Dr. Tammy Nemeth hosted Michelle Stirling, communications manager for the Friends of Science Society, to challenge the prevailing climate catastrophe narrative. Stirling pointed to the collapse of foundational arguments, including the RCP 8.5 climate scenario, which she noted has been deemed implausible by the scientific community. Despite this, the scenario continues to influence Canada’s Sustainable Finance Taxonomy.

The organization’s latest report, titled The Green Grendel and authored by retired economist Robert Lyman, likens the climate activist movement to the insatiable monster from the epic poem Beowulf. Lyman argues that activists remain impervious to opposition, regardless of the economic reality or the retraction of key studies. He specifically cited the 2024 Kotz et al. report, which was retracted by Nature after central bankers relied on its exaggerated climate damage functions for risk analysis.

Beyond the scientific critique, the Society highlighted the financial burden of industrial carbon taxes and the Pathways/Oil Sands Alliance Carbon Capture and Storage project. Stirling and Lyman maintain that the three pillars of the net-zero movement—the climate emergency, the projected trillions in damages, and the availability of immediate technical solutions—have all failed. The group has now issued an open letter to the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions (OSFI), demanding a public statement on these material changes.
