Pinnacol Assurance Marks 111 Years of Protecting Colorado Workers

On August 1, 2026, Pinnacol Assurance celebrates its 111th anniversary, sharing a birthday with the state of Colorado as it commemorates its 150th year of statehood. Since its 1915 inception, the insurance carrier has evolved from a state fund into a key economic pillar supporting 50,000 local businesses.

Established under the 1915 Workers' Compensation Act, the organization was originally designed to provide a safety net for high-risk trades, including mining and agriculture. Over the decades, it transformed from a passive state agency into a modern, member-owned mutual insurance company. Today, Pinnacol provides coverage for roughly one million workers, maintaining an A- rating from A.M. Best while consistently ranking as a top-tier carrier in state-administered satisfaction surveys.

The organization’s impact extends beyond policy management through the Pinnacol Foundation, which has awarded more than $9 million in scholarships to the children of workers injured or killed on the job. Additionally, the company has prioritized financial returns to its members, recently distributing its 11th consecutive general dividend, which returned over $900 million to Colorado employers. These efforts, combined with specialized safety consultations that reduce claim frequency by an average of 38%, solidify its role in the state's economic stability.

"Celebrating Pinnacol's 111th anniversary on the exact day Colorado turns 150 is a deeply meaningful moment for our entire team," said John O'Donnell, President and CEO of Pinnacol Assurance. As the state’s economy has diversified into technology, aerospace, and renewable energy, the company continues to adapt its digital solutions and safety programs to meet the needs of a modern, mobile workforce.
