Kevin Guest on Turning Happiness Into a Daily Workplace Discipline

Happiness is not a byproduct of perfect circumstances, but a deliberate choice, according to Kevin Guest, CEO of USANA Health Sciences. As August marks Happiness Happens Month, the executive suggests that professional resilience and personal fulfillment rely on small, actionable habits rather than waiting for conditions to improve.

Guest, author of 'All the Right Reasons: 12 Timeless Principles for Living a Life in Harmony,' advocates for five practices to integrate joy into daily routines. He suggests beginning and ending days by identifying three specific successes to train focus away from setbacks. Beyond mindset, he emphasizes creating scheduled moments of rest, offering specific recognition to colleagues, and proactively lightening the burdens of others through service. These actions, he argues, foster trust and strengthen professional morale.

Central to his philosophy is the 'Piano Principle,' inspired by his parents who prioritized a family piano over a vehicle. This lesson—that meaningful priorities must be intentionally scheduled—remains a cornerstone of his leadership at the Salt Lake City-based firm. By protecting time for relationships and values, Guest maintains that individuals can achieve greater clarity and purpose. All proceeds from his book support efforts to feed hungry children, with each copy funding 40 meals.
