BorgWarner Expands Variable Cam Timing Reach in Europe and China

BorgWarner has secured new contract wins for its variable cam timing technology, extending its footprint across both European and Chinese markets. The company will supply its center-bolt torque actuated systems for a high-performance V6 engine family in Europe and a high-volume turbocharged engine program for a major Chinese automaker.

The expansion includes a program life extension and a significant volume increase for a leading European premium OEM, covering V6 engines for sports and luxury vehicles ranging from 260 to 375 kW. This phase of the project is set to commence in January 2027. In China, BorgWarner successfully displaced an incumbent supplier to secure a contract for a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine family used in SUVs and sedans, with production scheduled to begin this September.

Henk Vanthournout, Vice President of BorgWarner and General Manager of Drivetrain and Morse Systems, stated that these awards highlight the competitiveness of their portfolio in both hybrid and combustion segments. The company’s center-bolt system relies on a design that simplifies internal oil passages compared to traditional pressure-actuated architectures. This approach improves cam phasing response and lock-pin engagement while reducing oil consumption, a combination that addresses the efficiency demands of modern hybrid powertrains.
