FibroBiologics Secures European Patent for Cartilage Gene Therapy

The European Patent Office has granted FibroBiologics a patent covering a gene therapy method designed to regenerate cartilage. By utilizing Sox9 to reprogram fibroblasts into cartilage-producing cells, the Houston-based biotechnology company aims to bypass traditional surgical interventions like joint replacements and tissue grafting in major European markets.

Patent No. EP 3043825 B1 includes 12 claims detailing the use of viral and non-viral vectors to deliver therapeutic polynucleotides, specifically Sox9, directly to fibroblast cells. This process encourages the cells to adopt a chondrocyte phenotype, essentially instructing the body to repair its own damaged tissue rather than relying on hardware or donor materials. The technology addresses the unique challenges of cartilage, which is avascular and notoriously difficult to heal.

CEO Pete O'Heeron noted that the approval bolsters the company’s global intellectual property strategy for fibroblast-based therapeutics. Chief Scientific Officer Hamid Khoja emphasized that the patent recognizes the practical application of Sox9 as a master regulator of chondrogenesis, providing a viable pathway for treatment in low-oxygen, avascular environments. FibroBiologics currently maintains a portfolio of over 270 patents and pending applications, focusing on chronic disease treatment and tissue regeneration.
