Georgia Forestry Foundation Grants $85,000 for Highway 82 Fire Recovery

The Georgia Forestry Foundation has awarded $85,000 to Brantley County Family Connection, providing a critical lifeline for families struggling to restore essential infrastructure. This funding targets the repair of wells and septic systems for over 30 households displaced by the catastrophic Highway 82 Fire earlier this year.

The Highway 82 blaze stands as the most destructive wildfire for residential property in Georgia history, leveling 110 homes and damaging 27 others across 22,419 acres. The disaster, compounded by the nearby 10,000-acre Pineland Road Fire, placed immense pressure on South Georgia emergency services.

In response, the Georgia Forestry Foundation established the Forest Wildfire Recovery Fund this April, raising roughly $150,000 from industry partners to bolster local relief. Tim Lowrimore, President and CEO of the Georgia Forestry Association, emphasized that the initiative reflects a commitment to the communities embedded within the forestry sector. By leveraging the local expertise of Brantley County Family Connection, the foundation aims to ensure these resources reach those facing the greatest hurdles in returning to safe, functional housing. Board chairman Fairiby Frye noted that the donation serves as a vital bridge for citizens working to rebuild their lives following the historic destruction.
