MetaVia hits dosing milestones in obesity drug trial

Cambridge-based MetaVia has successfully escalated all active patients to the highest planned dose levels of 48 mg and 64 mg in its Phase 1 study of DA-1726. This progress marks a pivotal step for the clinical-stage firm as it moves toward reporting 16-week topline data later this year.

The company, which focuses on cardiometabolic disorders, confirmed that participants in its ongoing Phase 1 Part 3 study reached these target doses through one-step and two-step titration regimens. CEO Hyung Heon Kim noted that the trial aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the drug’s impact on weight loss, waist circumference, and liver-related outcomes. Previous data presented at the EASL and ADA conferences highlighted a 9.1% mean weight loss after eight weeks of treatment with the 48 mg dosage, showing no evidence of a plateau.

Beyond DA-1726, MetaVia is advancing vanoglipel for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Recent preclinical data suggest the drug could serve as a combination backbone alongside therapies like resmetirom or metformin. Financially, MetaVia reported a net loss of $5.3 million for the second quarter of 2026, driven largely by increased R&D spending on its lead candidate. The company maintains $12.6 million in cash and equivalents, which it expects will fund operations through the end of the year.
