U.S. Diesel Exports Reach Record Peak Amid Global Supply Strains

American refineries shipped 1.9 million barrels of diesel overseas last week, hitting an all-time high as global markets scramble to replace fuel lost to maritime instability and drone strikes. This surge in exports provides a vital lifeline to Europe, yet leaves domestic stockpiles at their lowest seasonal level since 1996.

U.S. Diesel Exports Reach Record Peak Amid Global Supply Strains

The export surge reflects a broader shift in energy logistics, driven by persistent disruptions at maritime chokepoints and the systematic targeting of Russian energy infrastructure by Ukrainian drones. As Russian refinery output hits a 24-year low, the global reliance on U.S. Gulf Coast terminals has intensified. Shipments have now sustained a pace exceeding 1.5 million barrels per day for five consecutive weeks, primarily feeding ports in northwestern Europe.

Samantha Dart, co-head of global commodities research at Goldman Sachs, identified diesel as the most vulnerable energy product heading into the winter season. The combination of Russia’s export restrictions and seasonal demand creates a precarious balance for international markets. While U.S. refiners capture immediate gains from this supply squeeze, the domestic trade-off is clear: dwindling inventories leave the American market increasingly exposed to price volatility as the fall demand cycle approaches.
