Monte dei Paschi posts strong earnings while resisting Intesa takeover

Monte dei Paschi di Siena reported a quarterly net profit of €610 million on Friday, comfortably outpacing the €543 million forecast by analysts. The result arrives as the Italian lender actively explores strategic alternatives to fend off a €36 billion takeover bid launched by rival Intesa Sanpaolo in June.

The bank maintains a core capital ratio of 16.3%, providing what management describes as significant strategic flexibility to navigate the hostile bid. This figure sits nearly seven percentage points above current regulatory requirements, bolstering the institution's position as it works with financial advisers to weigh its options.

Following its 2017 state bailout and subsequent reprivatization, Monte dei Paschi has aggressively reshaped its profile, notably acquiring Mediobanca during last year’s consolidation wave. The current quarterly profit represents a 20% increase over the previous period, signaling operational resilience as the board seeks to preserve independence against Intesa’s proposed cash-and-share offer.
