ROHM Scales Terahertz Power with New Resonant Tunneling Diode

Kyoto-based ROHM Co., Ltd. has unveiled its second-generation terahertz wave oscillation device, achieving a fourfold increase in output power over its predecessor. By leveraging resonant tunneling diodes, the company aims to lower the barrier for research institutions and developers looking to integrate high-frequency sensing into compact, non-destructive testing systems.

The new hardware, designated as the RTD-EVK-G2 evaluation kit, provides a streamlined path for testing terahertz waves—a spectrum positioned between radio waves and light. While these waves offer unique advantages for medical imaging and high-resolution radar, traditional systems have historically been hindered by bulky, expensive infrastructure. ROHM’s latest iteration maintains the 0.5 x 0.5mm footprint of its first-generation chip while pushing output capacity to 40 microwatts. This boost in power enhances signal detectability after transmission or reflection, a critical requirement for precise sensing applications. The device remains housed in a compact 4.0 x 4.3mm PLCC package, ensuring it fits within space-constrained environments. By reducing both heat generation and power consumption, the company seeks to simplify the development process for firms navigating the complexities of high-frequency technology.
