SK Hynix Commits 54 Trillion Won to Massive AI Memory Expansion

SK Hynix is launching a 54 trillion won expansion project to construct new semiconductor fabrication plants in Yongin and Cheongju. The move aims to cement the company’s position as a dominant supplier in the AI era, specifically targeting the soaring demand for high-bandwidth memory and enterprise-grade NAND storage solutions.

The board-approved investment allocates 35.2 trillion won for the Yongin Y2 fab and 19.1 trillion won for the Cheongju M17 site. This capital injection accelerates the company's long-term master plan, pulling forward the completion timeline for its Yongin Semiconductor Cluster by 12 years to 2033. The Y2 facility is slated to break ground next July with a cleanroom opening in June 2029, while the M17 plant will begin construction in February 2025 for a December 2028 debut.

Management frames this aggressive scaling not as a temporary market cycle, but as a structural shift where memory serves as essential infrastructure for AI performance. By prioritizing the ability to match customer supply requirements in real-time, the firm intends to secure a competitive edge in the global semiconductor supply chain. The investment covers not only production floors but also integrated research centers and critical auxiliary utility infrastructure to support the increased output of next-generation DRAM and enterprise SSDs. While construction follows a fixed master schedule, the company plans to calibrate cleanroom expansion and equipment installation to align with shifting market demand, ensuring capital efficiency while fortifying its role in the domestic and global electronics ecosystem.
