Contra Costa County Teamsters Set Strike Date for August 19

More than 2,000 Contra Costa County employees are prepared to walk off the job on August 19. Represented by Teamsters Local 856, workers across 250 job classifications—ranging from nursing to maintenance—voted to strike after months of stalled negotiations over pay equity and cost of living adjustments.

The labor dispute centers on a pay structure that union leadership describes as fundamentally inequitable when compared to neighboring jurisdictions. Following a 92 percent strike authorization vote last month, tensions reached a breaking point after a mediation session on August 5 failed to yield a new contract. Matt Finnegan, chief negotiator and director of public services for Local 856, stated that the union seeks modest adjustments to maintain service standards for the community. With mediation scheduled to resume on August 12, the threat of a county-wide work stoppage remains the primary leverage for the 2,000-member workforce.
