Minesto Claims World-Leading Efficiency for Faroe Islands Tidal Plant

Stronger-than-expected tidal currents in Vestmannasund have pushed Minesto’s Dragon 4 power plant to record-breaking summer production levels. By upgrading the system’s power-take-off unit, the Swedish company has successfully captured more energy from the Faroe Islands' flow cycles, validating its latest hydrodynamic kite technology against real-world ocean conditions.

The upgrade specifically targeted the power-take-off (PTO) system, which proved insufficient to fully harness the intensity of the Vestmanna currents. According to CTO Bernt Erik Westre, the modified hardware now allows the unit to capture energy in direct proportion to the available resource, aligning closely with the firm's original simulation models. This stability represents a shift from previous, more limited performance cycles.

CEO Dr. Martin Edlund asserts that the multi-month performance data confirms the Dragon 4 as the most efficient tidal energy plant globally in terms of conversion performance. Beyond the technical milestone, the company views this success as a significant increase in the commercial value of its proprietary hardware and software. The ability to integrate complex PTO systems into dynamic marine environments remains a central pillar of the company’s strategy to scale its tidal technology.
