The demonstration tank serves as the centerpiece of a collaborative research effort involving Shell, NASA, GenH2, and the University of Houston. By integrating this hardware into the existing Hydrogen Test Facility, the team plans to run daily refills to subject the insulation to repeated thermal cycles. This accelerated testing schedule is designed to yield the performance data necessary for large-scale commercial deployment of the technology.

Yogesh Meher, CB&I’s Vice President of Engineering, noted that the successful fill validates a more cost-effective pathway for the hydrogen economy. The new tank triples the facility's total storage capacity, allowing for both higher throughput and longer-duration tests. This initiative draws on CB&I’s six-decade history with cryogenic storage, a legacy that includes constructing the world’s largest liquid hydrogen sphere for NASA’s Artemis program in 2022.
