The eight-week, full-time program spans disciplines including construction, land operations, architecture, and finance. It is open to students from universities, community colleges, and trade schools. The initiative serves as a critical pipeline for the company, which has converted 18% of its interns into full-time employees over the last three years, with a majority moving directly into construction roles. Chairman and CEO Sheryl Palmer views these programs as essential to overcoming the persistent labor shortages currently affecting trade partners nationwide.
Participants are paired with mentors to gain field experience, culminating in a capstone project. For employees like Jared Kelty, a purchasing agent in the Phoenix division, the program represents a direct path to employment. Kelty now serves as a mentor himself, guiding current students through the same transition he navigated. Beyond its internal efforts, the company maintains a strategic partnership with the Building Talent Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to connecting students with scholarships and recruitment tools to address the widening gap between retiring tradespeople and new entrants.
