Gold Dips as Markets Brace for U.S. Inflation Prints

Spot gold prices edged lower to $4,329.20 an ounce on Monday, while silver firmed to $63.80, as traders consolidated gains following last week's labor market shock. Investors are now pivoting their focus toward this week’s critical U.S. inflation data, which will determine the path for Federal Reserve interest rate policy.

Gold Dips as Markets Brace for U.S. Inflation Prints

The cooling labor market, characterized by a 4.1% unemployment rate and significant downward revisions to previous job counts, initially spurred a rally in precious metals. Markets had slashed the probability of a September Fed rate hike to 44%, a sharp decline from two-thirds just one week ago. However, Monday’s session reflects a more cautious environment as the U.S. dollar regains strength and Treasury yields drift back toward the 4.6% threshold ahead of Wednesday’s CPI release and Thursday’s PPI figures.

Geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to influence the broader commodity landscape. Iran’s demands for sanctions relief and asset releases as conditions for fully reopening the waterway create a complex outlook for oil prices. While higher crude costs bolster safe-haven demand for gold, they simultaneously threaten to reignite inflation, potentially forcing the Federal Reserve to maintain a hawkish stance. Global equities remain mixed, with the Nikkei 225 climbing 2.1% while European indices like the FTSE 100 showed modest declines, reflecting the global uncertainty surrounding the upcoming economic data.
