Lupin Secures FDA Approval for Hyperkalemia Treatment Generic

Mumbai-based Lupin Limited has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval for its generic version of Sodium Zirconium Cyclosilicate, a treatment for hyperkalemia. The medication, available in 5 g and 10 g packets, enters a competitive market currently dominated by AstraZeneca’s Lokelma, which generated $568 million in annual U.S. sales.

The regulatory green light confirms the bioequivalence of Lupin’s oral suspension to the reference listed drug. By securing this approval, the company expands its U.S. cardiovascular portfolio, targeting the adult patient population suffering from elevated potassium levels. This addition aligns with Lupin’s strategy to leverage its manufacturing network—comprising 15 state-of-the-art facilities—to capture market share from established specialty brands.

Lupin operates across more than 100 countries, maintaining a significant footprint in India and the United States. With a workforce exceeding 26,000 professionals and six global research centers, the firm continues to transition from traditional generics toward complex medicines and biosimilars. The company intends to integrate this new offering into its existing distribution channels immediately, aiming to provide a cost-effective alternative for clinical management of hyperkalemia.
