Heinemann Taps Jennifer Serravallo for Literacy Resource

As schools increasingly rely on excerpts and standardized test preparation, literacy expert Jennifer Serravallo is launching a new curriculum designed to return full-length books to the classroom. The program, titled Whole Book Comprehension, aims to rebuild student stamina and deep reading skills for grades 1 through 6.

The resource, slated for release in November 2026, integrates grade-level fiction and nonfiction with explicit instruction. By providing teachers with structured lessons and assessment tools, the program seeks to bridge the gap between core ELA curricula and the practical need for sustained engagement with longer texts. Each grade level features eight curated titles, split evenly between fiction and nonfiction, intended to support diverse learning needs and standardized curriculum requirements.

Serravallo, known for her bestselling strategy books, developed this framework to counter what she describes as a decline in whole-book reading. The approach incorporates the Science of Reading, offering teachers flexible models for whole-class, small-group, or independent instruction. According to Roderick Spelman, Heinemann’s SVP of Content Development, the partnership addresses a critical need for educators struggling to maintain student focus and comprehension as they navigate modern literacy demands.
