Halsted Corporation Marks 150 Years of Industrial Packaging

When E.S. Halsted founded his burlap sack business in 1876, the telephone was a new invention and Colorado had just joined the Union. Today, the Cranbury-based company marks its 150th anniversary, having evolved from a Manhattan manufacturer into a global distributor of flexible industrial and food-grade packaging.

The company remains family-owned, a rarity for an organization of its vintage. After Henry Jaszewski acquired the business in 1974, he pivoted toward polypropylene imports, setting the stage for the firm's modern identity. Under current leadership—President Michael Murphy and the new generation, CEO Justin Murphy and COO Kyle Murphy—the focus remains on the distributor-first model that has sustained the firm through three different centuries.

The operation now manages a sprawling logistics network, including a 100,000-square-foot facility in New Jersey and a recent expansion in Savannah, Georgia. While the firm continues to supply industrial staples like bulk bags and sandbags, it has diversified into the consumer market with its DuraSack brand. According to Michael Murphy, the secret to this longevity is simple: long-term employee retention, with an average tenure exceeding ten years, and a commitment to customer relationships that mirrors the company's founding principles in 1876.
