Wall Street Stumbles as Tech Slides and Geopolitical Tensions Loom

Wall Street’s primary indexes retreated on Tuesday as tech sector losses dampened sentiment, even as investors weighed reports of potential diplomatic breakthroughs in the Middle East. While energy stocks climbed on regional instability, traders remain cautious ahead of critical inflation data set to influence upcoming Federal Reserve policy decisions.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 both slipped 0.11%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.35%. Alphabet shares fell 3%, serving as the primary drag on the communication services sector. Meanwhile, the energy sector outperformed with a 1.1% gain, fueled by Brent crude futures holding near weekly highs.

Optimism regarding a potential U.S.-Iran arrangement, signaled by Pakistani defence minister Khawaja Asif, struggled to buoy the broader market. Ron Albahary, chief investment officer at LNW, noted that investors remain overly optimistic about the durability of such diplomatic shifts. Financial markets are now bracing for consumer and producer price readings, which will be instrumental in determining whether the Federal Reserve opts for a rate hike in September or a pause.

Corporate movements provided a mixed backdrop to the session. Alternative asset managers Apollo Global and Blackstone rose between 4% and 6% following a $500 billion compute-financing agreement with Nvidia. Conversely, On shares plummeted over 19% after the sportswear brand missed second-quarter sales estimates, and Rocket Lab slipped 1.6% following delays to its Neutron rocket debut.
