Iran Links Strait of Hormuz Reopening to End of War and Asset Release

The Strait of Hormuz will remain shuttered to most traffic until the United States halts its military campaign and releases frozen Iranian funds. Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, confirmed Tuesday that these non-negotiable demands are the new baseline for any potential maritime agreement.

These requirements, transmitted through mediators, effectively tether the future of global oil transit to the broader geopolitical conflict. By moving the goalposts beyond simple shipping protocols, Tehran has dismantled recent optimism from U.S. officials, who had previously signaled that negotiations with Oman were gaining traction. Iran now insists that any accord must formally recognize its security interests and grant it expanded oversight of both inbound and outbound vessel traffic.

The market reacted immediately to the hardening stance. Brent crude for October climbed to $88.70 per barrel, a gain of $0.98, as traders recalibrated for prolonged volatility. While the shipping lane has been a focal point for weeks, tanker traffic remains heavily restricted amid persistent security risks. With Tehran officially framing the waterway's status as a leverage point for wider concessions, the ball is now in Washington's court to determine if these high-stakes conditions can be met.
