Hyland Launches AI Tool to Speed Up Transfer Student Admissions

As U.S. colleges brace for a projected 13% decline in high school graduates by 2041, universities are pivoting toward transfer and adult students to stabilize enrollment. However, the complex, manual nature of evaluating diverse academic transcripts has created a processing bottleneck that often drives prospective students away.

Cleveland-based Hyland is introducing Intelligent Transcripts, an AI-native platform designed to automate the intake and evaluation of academic records. By leveraging agentic AI that interprets multi-page documents, the system converts raw transcript data into structured information, aiming to replace the manual review process that currently consumes over 20 minutes per document.

For institutions, this shift addresses the "enrollment cliff" by making it feasible to process transfer applications—historically the most document-heavy and labor-intensive segment of admissions—at scale. Valerie Campbell, associate registrar at Grand Rapids Community College, noted that the technology streamlines error correction and minimizes manual input, which has long hindered institutional agility. The platform integrates with existing student information systems and allows for human-in-the-loop oversight, triggering manual review only when the AI's confidence levels fall below established thresholds.
