The Vanishing Retirement: Generation X Faces a Perpetual Grind

Nearly one in five Gen X workers now believes they will never fully retire, a sobering statistic that underscores a broader financial crisis for the cohort. After navigating decades of economic instability, many are finding that their prime earning years are being consumed by inflation rather than wealth accumulation.

A survey of 1,003 Gen X professionals by resume builder Zety reveals a generation struggling to maintain financial footing. For 64% of respondents, recent inflation has inflicted more damage on their personal finances than the 2008 Great Recession or the COVID-19 pandemic. With 58% of workers reporting that their current income barely covers basic living expenses, the traditional retirement timeline has collapsed.

This economic pressure is forcing a radical shift in long-term strategy. To cope, 44% of Gen Xers have slashed discretionary spending, while a quarter have taken on side hustles or second jobs to bridge the gap. Jasmine Escalera, a career expert at Zety, notes that retirement has transitioned from a fixed milestone into a fluid, often receding target. As confidence in long-term security erodes, 61% of these workers report feeling less financially stable than they once anticipated, with many expressing deep regret over not prioritizing savings earlier in their careers.
