Rural Voice Series Returns to Tackle Minnesota’s Growth Challenges

The Rural Voice town hall series returns this September for its fifth season, bringing public discussions to Marshall, St. Joseph, Grand Rapids, Albert Lea, and Faribault. Moderated by Minnesota Public Radio’s Kerri Miller, the events aim to address pressing regional issues including workforce housing, community belonging, and local infrastructure.

Since its 2022 debut, the project has served as a forum for residents, business leaders, and policymakers to exchange practical solutions for the state’s rural regions. Co-founder Tim Penny emphasizes that the 2026 agenda focuses on long-term sustainability, specifically examining how small towns can retain talent and manage the rapid development of data centers.

Each session runs from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., beginning with a Marshall event on housing on September 8 and concluding with a discussion on data centers in Faribault on September 29. The series is supported by a coalition of regional foundations, including the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation and the Northland Foundation. Following the in-person gatherings, Minnesota Public Radio will broadcast recordings of the discussions, extending the reach of these local debates to a statewide audience.
