Kavalan Pairs Rare Mizunara Casks with Taiwanese Butterfly Art

The rare, porous grain of Japanese Mizunara oak meets the subtropical intensity of Yilan County in Kavalan’s latest limited release. For this collection, the Taiwanese distillery tapped contemporary artist Takahide Komatsu to adorn bottles with native butterfly species, bridging the gap between rigorous cooperage and delicate natural aesthetics.

The collaboration introduces two single cask strength expressions: one crafted from unpeated malt and another from peated malt. Each utilizes the famously demanding Mizunara wood, which requires over a century to mature and presents significant challenges during the coopering process. Within Taiwan’s warm, humid climate, the casks impart distinct notes of sandalwood, incense, and coconut, which layer over the distillery’s signature tropical fruit profile.

King Car Group Chairman YT Lee noted that the project reflects the technical difficulty of working with such rare timber while honoring the biodiversity of the region. The unpeated version offers a profile of vanilla, ripe pineapple, and creamy toffee, while the peated expression balances gentle smoke with dried longan and peach. Beyond the standard 700ml bottles, the distillery is offering a Hand-painted Collector’s Double Set, where each label is individually signed by Komatsu. The collection is currently available through Kavalan’s official retail channels and select liquor stores in Taiwan.
