Gold Stalls Near $4,400 as Unemployment Claims Edge Higher

209,000 Americans filed for state unemployment benefits last week, surpassing economist forecasts of 202,000. This uptick in labor market volatility hit the wires Thursday morning, forcing investors to recalibrate their positions as spot gold flirted with the $4,400 per ounce threshold before cooling slightly.

Gold Stalls Near $4,400 as Unemployment Claims Edge Higher

The Labor Department report for the week ending August 8 indicates a cooling in hiring momentum, with the previous week's figures upwardly revised to 200,000. The four-week moving average, a metric favored for smoothing out short-term fluctuations, hit 199,000, narrowly missing the anticipated 197,000 mark.

Despite the labor data miss, gold struggled to sustain its momentum. Shortly after the 8:30 am ET release—which coincided with the latest Producer Price Index data—the precious metal retreated to $4,395.10 per ounce, marking a 0.31% decline on the daily chart. Meanwhile, continuing jobless claims for the week ending August 1 landed at 1.777 million, coming in below the projected 1.800 million and trailing the revised 1.799 million from the prior period.
