Cryoablation Gains Clinical Ground in Breast Cancer De-Escalation

Two recent peer-reviewed publications are bolstering the case for cryoablation as a standard alternative to traditional breast cancer surgery. The studies validate the use of IceCure Medical’s ProSense system, citing successful five-year clinical trial outcomes and expanding the technology's application to treat axillary lymph node metastases.

The first review, published in Clinical Breast Cancer, positions cryoablation as a critical tool in the shift toward treatment de-escalation. By offering a minimally invasive, freezing-based approach, the procedure achieves safety and efficacy results comparable to conventional surgery. The authors point to the 3.1% in-breast tumor recurrence rate observed in the five-year ICE3 trial as evidence of the method's reliability for early-stage, low-risk patients aged 70 and older, noting its formal integration into American Society of Breast Surgeons guidelines.

A second study in the Journal of Breast Imaging broadens the scope of the technology beyond primary tumors. Researchers explored the use of cryoablation for axillary lymph node metastases, providing a new path for patients who are either poor candidates for surgery or choose to decline it. This development marks a shift in clinical practice, as the procedure proves effective for both curative and palliative intent. IceCure CEO Eyal Shamir stated that this growing body of peer-reviewed evidence is essential to the company’s efforts to drive global adoption of the ProSense platform.
